ZETTELKASTEN

… German for card catalog. Also a system for using notes (externalized thoughts) for generating mental models. This is what I’m exploring as a method of note taking while reading. This zettelkasten is a newish movement centered around the amazing systems thinker and social scientist Niklas Luhmann.

“I cannot remember the books I have read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson — I can’t but help think this can’t be helped with better recall. Note taking and zettelkasten are my attempt. Emerson seems to be admitting some kind of failure to grab opportunities found in books.

Marcus Aurelius ...

wrote, “The only wealth which you will keep forever is the wealth you have given away.”

Yes, this also applies to other things like love and knowledge, you only keep what you give. And the more you give the more you get to keep.

Move, learn, correct, move again...

Key is to just focus and start. Waiting for the right time to act is a fools game. There is a module in our minds that wants us to wait till things are different, to rest, hesitate. This makes no sense, as I’ll be dead soon, maybe today. Life has come together, we exist in spite of the sheer impossibility of everything coming together as it has. We must leap.

Spirituality ...

is the position where wonder, exploration, adventure, mystery are dominant. A sense of the possible, a resting with the gift of life. A deep connection to what is, what happens, the desire to be open to whatever occurs in the moment. The drive to improve, to work toward enlightenment or the closest approximation we can manage.

Everything in the world

… all thought, all emotions, all notions are internal and are not “out there”. My mind creates my day. What happen is the result of thinking and making judgements about what I perceive.

Note to self …

you’ll be glad you started something new today. The beginning of a habit, planted a seed. How knows? We’ll see. I started here, you?

Fully embrace ...

the fact that in a conversation or interaction, we are the ones ‘on stage’ that everyone is looking to for love, information, entertainment, validation, collaboration, a hug or simply a smile.
