Fall 2000 Kestrel Creek Gallery Newsletter

Welcome back to this edition of our newsletter. We hope that we can add some value to the woodturning community. This newsletter links to our website where you will find the full text with images for each article below. We are sure that you will be interested in several of these features. Feel free to forward this on to anyone who you think might be interested in this.

1. We've added 5 new pieces on display. The styles vary widely from a small carved lidded ebony container to a huge maple burl hollow vessel suspended in the air on two legs to an elegantly shaped Southwest style vessel that is sandblasted and ebonized. This is a huge spectrum of designs that we are proud to share with you.

2. We are proud to show the work of our new "Artist In Residence" Bill Johnston. Bill is a professional turner from North Carolina. He has been turning for 20 years and has a wonderful style and technique that he is sharing on our website. He is focusing his presentation on the use of color in woodturning art.

3. Our Critique Central Project is up and running. This is an exciting project that allows you to be an art critic. First up is a piece by Jim Christiansen titled "Arts and Crafts Box". This is a carved, colored, and footed box with a pipestone finial in the arts and crafts style. On this site you will find photos, Jim's design thoughts, and critiques by others. You will also have the opportunity to add your own critique. Later, a piece will be created using advice gained by the critiques. And we will put the two up for comparison.

4. Ben Carpenter has added a great article on his perspective as a seventeen
year old woodturner. He has developed tremendous skills and he shares his ideas on woodturning and the "risks" involved.

5. Jerry Glaser, an engineer and woodturner who is the creative genius behind Glaser Hi-Tec tools and several other knowledgeable woodturners contribute to a in-depth look at grinding wheels.

6. We have reviewed many new sites and added them to our links page. There is now a whole new section on Art Links. We now have 351 quality and indexed links on our "Inspirational Links" page.

7. We have added several new and exciting images to our slide show. The show contains artistic group shots. It takes a couple moments to load the first few images before the show takes off. You will need to have an up-to-date Java enabled browser to view this slide show.
