Outrigger attachment for shortbed lathe

I have started using a "Jamieson" style attachment on my lathe. Originally I thought having a shortbed lathe would be a  slight disadvantage in this setup. So after some tinkering in the shop I came up with the following attachment for the tail end of my bench. I've turned many solid and segmented pieces with it and it works wonderfully. This is more than sturdy enough to handle anything my lathe can turn. It is very adjustable for getting in pieces from various angles.

This jig is made from shop scraps. Cherry, oak and some birch plywood. The knobs I got from Rockler but are availabel anywhere. I also got the "self-lubricating" and "friction-free" UHMW plastic from Rockler.  All these things can be found in their current catalog in the "Jigs" section. Most other general woodworking catologs and better stock woodworking centers also carry these products. I do use the vertical portion of the jig sometimes without the bed extension when working on smaller work. When I use it in this configuration I have a small block of wood that I jam into the bed and I use a long 3/8 bolt to attach the vertical jig to the lathe. It works fine because there is very little stress on it when hollowing.

I have put this entire idea is in the public domain for anyone to work with to improve and if anyone wants to market anything like this they are also welcome to the idea. In fact I'll freely help anyone who wants to build something like this commercially.

The pictures should be self explanatory and you would have to customize this for your setup anyway. Feel free to ask questions by emailing me at will.simpson@kestrelcreek.com
