Artist in Residence

Phil Brennion, a professional woodworker since 1976, resides in central Arizona. For last 16 years, turning vessels has been the main focus of his art. His work has been influenced greatly by the images and cultures of the Southwest and appears collections around the world. Surface treatments, along with Pueblo forms and design elements, used on and off the lathe, have become his recognized specialty. Phil produces works primarily for galleries. He enjoys writing articles and teaching woodturning through classes and seminars. Article on his turning designs and techniques have appeared in numerous magazine, including WOOD Magazine and the American Woodturner. Phil is one of the owners of Van Gogh's Ear , a Co-Operative Art Gallery in Prescott, Arizona. He currently consults on woodturning to WOOD Magazine as well as hosting the woodturning discussion group at WOOD ONLINE.

"Corn Bowl"
Cottonwood 10" X 7"
This olla was inspired by a piece done in this manner by one of the famous Nampeyo potters. It is dyed cottonwood which has then been lacquered and burnished.
"Ceremonial Remnant"
Juniper 6" X 14"
This Juniper vessel represents a found ceremonial olla. The woven rim depicts the more than ordinary usage of the vessel and the voids, the effects of time. Currently in an Arizona Commission on the Arts traveling exhibition.

Formal lines and natural edges. Turned then carved - treated with steel and copper in acrylic then oxidized.

"Mt. Vernon Vase"
Juniper Burl 12" X  3.5"
This piece of Juniper burl was turned then carved. The carving was treated with copper leafing and then oxidized and brushed. It is a rendition of an Arts and Crafts piece with a little twist of nature.
